An introductory course in research designs, methods, and techniques used in design-based research. The course will focus on methodological considerations in designing and conducting empirical research. We will highlight the practical issues involved in the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods in language teaching and learning. Insight will be given into the most commonly used data-collection techniques such as surveys, interviews and observations. The course is intended for researchers in language teaching and learning who need to investigate user data or results of specific design practices and experiments in a more evidence-based manner. This programme will be most valuable for researchers who are either in the process of designing their empirical research or in the early stages of conducting it. All participants will receive a reader including the necessary didactic materials (handouts, PowerPoints, articles, etc.).
1. Introduction: What is design-based research? When is it appropriate? …
| | 2. Research designs: Which research design can be chosen? When and why? | Quantitative: - various experiment designs and their respected pros and cons
| Qualitative: - various designs and techniques | | 3. Measurement: collecting more reliable and valid evidence | Quantitative: - direct and indirect measurement - variables and measurement levels - the basics of scale development, with a focus on dimensionality, reliability, and validity (SPSS: short introduction on factor analysis)
| Qualitative: - open survey/logbooks - thinking up protocols out loud - observation and stimulated recall - interview - triangulation | | 4. Analysing: generating more data-driven conclusions | Quantitative: - parameters of central density and variability (arithmetic mean, variance, and standard deviation) - sampling theory - t-test - analysis of variance - correlation - analysis of covariance | Qualitative: - content analysis - coding (inductive/deductive) - quantification - comparative analysis |
